Picture Lent, Deny, John 18:25-27

Peter denied knowing Jesus. Most of the other disciples ditched him too. I wonder how often we, in the interest of order maybe, deny Jesus’ love to others. As if we have cornered the market of right theology, right worship and right beliefs. Tomorrow is Good Friday. It’s a good day to go deep and consider who we are excluding. #picturelent #deny

Except when we talk about Peter denying Jesus three times before the rooster crows, I don’t often look at roosters and think of betrayal. Actually with the exception of this guy, I don’t think about roosters at all; and when I look at this one I don’t think betrayal, I think three rings of the bell means everyone out of the pool it’s time to eat. That said, for me one of the blessings of Picture Lent was to learn to look at everyday things in this world differently and to see God’s message in all of them. Even a dinner bell ringing rooster can become an ongoing reminder to be more diligent in being God’s messenger and less concerned about the world’s opinion.

Fred’s mother probably knew everyone one in York County, Nebraska and thought Fred should know them, too! She’d say, “Oh Fred, you know them!” He’d always DENY it!! Until on our way home after dropping her off! He’d say, Oh I do remember that person!” Peter denied knowing Jesus. But in his heart he knew who he was and what was the plan. We should slow down our life an notice people. #picturelent #deny

Roosters and deny make me think of when I was about 5 or 6 yrs old and told at my grandparents farm to “leave the rooster alone!” I was in denial that I could out run the mean rooster as he would peck me! And after teasing him he chased me, attached his feet onto the top of my head and taught me a lesson! I felt bad in more ways than one as they had to kill the rooster!
Today’s devo put a new perspective for me. Did Peter deny to stay close to where Jesus was? Do I justify my own “lies” in the same way at times!?! Unfortunately the answer is yes. Hummm….maybe I should think about my lie as a mean rooster when I do this!!

We deny following Jesus, probably many times a day. How often do we just look the other way, pretend we don’t see or just don’t want to get involved, when we someone else in need? We all need to open our eyes and our hearts to be ready to help others at all times.
